Garmin Instinct 3 AMOLED Review: Rugged, Bright and Built to Last
Garmin's rugged outdoor watch finally gets AMOLED, while keeping excellent GPS, long battery life and one of the most useful flashlights on any smartwatch.

What stands out
- Excellent GPS accuracy — Multi-band GPS and SatIQ consistently perform well, including in wooded and more difficult environments.
- Outstanding battery life — Even the AMOLED model comfortably lasts around a week with heavier settings and considerably longer with gesture wake.
- Bright AMOLED display — A major visual upgrade over previous Instinct watches while retaining the rugged design.
- Built-in flashlight is genuinely useful — Reviewers repeatedly highlight the variable white/red LED flashlight rather than treating it as a gimmick.
- Built for rough use — 10 ATM water resistance, a reinforced bezel and MIL-STD testing make it much tougher than typical fitness watches.
- Strong Garmin training ecosystem — Training Readiness, Training Status, HRV, Body Battery, daily workouts and recovery tools are all included.

Before you buy
- No proper offline maps — You get breadcrumb/course navigation rather than the detailed maps available on Garmin's premium watches.
- Older heart-rate sensor — Garmin retained the Elevate Gen 4 sensor, which can struggle more during intervals and rapid HR changes.
- No touchscreen — Everything is controlled through Garmin's five physical buttons.
- No onboard music — Spotify playlists or local music cannot be stored on the watch.
- Chunky design — At nearly 15 mm thick, it can be noticeable during sleep despite being fairly light.
- Missing premium health features — There's no ECG, and the health hardware is behind newer Garmin models using Elevate Gen 5.
Garmin Instinct 3 AMOLED takes one of Garmin’s most recognizable outdoor watches and fixes arguably its biggest weakness is display.
The 1.2-inch AMOLED panel is bright, sharp and dramatically more modern than the monochrome screens traditionally associated with the Instinct series. More importantly, Garmin hasn’t sacrificed the things that made the Instinct appealing in the first place.
The watch remains seriously rugged, with a fiber-reinforced polymer body, metal-reinforced bezel, 10 ATM water resistance and MIL-STD testing for thermal and shock resistance. Garmin has also added one of our favourite features from its premium watches — a proper LED flashlight with multiple brightness levels and red-light mode.
GPS performance is one of the strongest parts of the package. Multi-band GNSS with SatIQ has performed extremely well across independent testing, including wooded routes and longer runs. OutdoorGearLab found minimal GPS drift, while The5KRunner placed the Instinct 3 among its stronger GPS performers.
Battery life is equally impressive for an AMOLED smartwatch. Garmin promises up to 18 days with gesture activation or seven days using the always-on display. Real owners frequently report roughly a week with heavy settings and around 10 days or more with more conservative configurations.
Garmin Instinct 3 – compromises.
Garmin surprisingly sticks with its older Elevate Gen 4 heart-rate sensor. It’s generally dependable during steady exercise, but several tests show slower reactions during intervals and strength training. There’s also no ECG, touchscreen, onboard music or proper topographic mapping.
That final omission is particularly noticeable now that competitors such as the COROS NOMAD offer global maps and turn-by-turn navigation.
At its original CA$629.99 price, those omissions were much harder to overlook. At roughly CA$420 in current Canadian sales, the Instinct 3 AMOLED becomes considerably more convincing.
If you want a rugged Garmin with excellent GPS, weeks rather than days between charges, useful training metrics and a beautiful AMOLED screen, the Instinct 3 remains one of the strongest options in Garmin’s lineup.
